However the airport is internationally known as Bratislava Airport, also people in Slovakia call it simply Letisko Bratislava or Bratislava-Ivanka. Bratislava Airport is located 8 km (5.2 mi) from Bratislava, the capital of Slovak Republic. Since 1993 it has been named after general Milan Rastislav Štefánik, whose aircraft crashed near Bratislava in 1919.
